Jackie:  "Dreams & Nightmares" - The Making of a Comic Book

Further research for your journal:  

In your journal make a note of all the artists that Jackie talks about in the video.  Then, find out what makes their drawing, and story writing, so special.  

Look closely at Jackie's work.  Can you see what ideas she was trying to incorporate in the work?  What do you think about her choice of materials and methods?  Research the materials/techniques she used (brush pen, hatching).

Mind Mapping exercise:

Map all that you found out about Jackie's work using a mind mapping app.  

Experiment:

Try to make a short hand drawn comic yourself.  You don't need to have years of drawing practice like Jackie, or be very good at writing stories.  Here's an idea you could try:

1)  Set the alarm on your phone for every hour, from when you wake up in the morning, to when you go to bed at night (set it to vibrate). Then, every time the alarm goes off, write down everything that happened to you in the previous hour, as you would in a diary - try and remember some of the activities, and conversations, and your feelings etc..  By the end of the day you will have lots of material to make a comic strip based on a day in your life.  Maybe each hour could be a different panel in your comic strip, or you could just use the diary records.  You can fictionalize the story - it's all up to you - be creative (use your imagination, look at the work of other artists, make connections to bigger ideas)! 

2) The next step is to choose a simple comic book style that you think you could manage.  You might start by researching simple comic book styles and making a Pinterest board like this.   Select 2 or 3 from your Pinterest board - ones that have a drawing difficulty that is challenging for you, but not impossible.   Then, just copy them, as closely as you can.  By copying them, you will get better at drawing.  The main way of getting good at drawing is just by doing drawings! 

3) Using what you learnt about simple comic book styles, figure out your own style - start by drawing yourself (or the character that is going to be in your 'day in the life' story) in different positions (standing, sitting, looking to the side, etc.)  When you have figured out a style, you can work out the various scenes of your story (look at your Pinterest board again for ideas of simple ways to show furniture, landscapes, objects etc..)

4)  Make your comic strip!  Try just one letter sized page to start with - say 3 - 9 panels.  If it doesn't work out, try again, maybe with a different style - or simplify the story.  Look again at the simple strips on the Pinterest board.  Jackie did a really quick 'day in the life of..' comic strip as an example, using a very simple character style - check it out!

IMPORTANT: In your journal, write a reflection of the experience of making the comic strip (or do an audio or video recording reflection).  Describe how you made the comic, and what you would do differently in your next comic strip.  Did you learn anything about yourself from the experience?  Do you think that comics can be a good way of examining life, and expressing yourself - 'telling your story', your way of looking at the world?

More ideas for your journal:

How do you find out about artists?  What 'keywords' could you use when searching the Internet?  Try and find comic book artists that make stories about subjects that interest you.  Write a journal post about what you found.

More ideas for improving your drawing:

One of the ways you can develop a more sophisticated drawing style is by introducing the illusion of perspective.  YouTube has lots of tutorials on how to introduce perspective into your drawings.  Find tutorials that you like, and follow them.  Try searching for ' drawing tutorial one point perspective', and 'drawing tutorial two point perspective' .  Only choose videos where the artist slowly takes you through the process, explaining every line that they make - do not watch 'speed' drawing type tutorials (unless it is just for fun!).  EXAMPLE OF A GOOD TUTORIAL HERE.

Look at the work of Ushio Shinohara (there are some good YouTube videos and a wikipedia page).  What is 'Action Painting'?  Why does Ushio use boxing gloves?  Is it important for artists to be playful?  

Look at the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat (there are many video documentaries about his life and work on YouTube).  Why do you think he became so famous?  Some critics have mocked his work as 'childish'; what do you think?  What is Neo-expressionism?  

Look closely at Landon's work.  Can you see what ideas he was trying to incorporate in the work?  What do you think about his choice of materials and methods?  Research the materials he used, and maybe experiment with them yourself.  What other materials or techniques do you think he could have used with good effect?

More ideas for your journal:

Write a post about 'Neo-dada' art (start with the wikipedia page, and look at the references and links to continue the research).  You could also make a Pinterest board or a Wakelet of Neo-data artwork, and link this to your journal.

Learn about symbols:

Basquiat used a lot of symbols in his artwork. Many of these were inspired by the symbols he saw on the street made by graffiti artists, or hobos.

Collect all the symbols you can find in Basquiat's work and make a journal post about these.  After researching his life, try and figure out what these symbols might mean to Basquiat.  How did they relate to this life, and his way of looking at the world?  How did he use these symbols to try and  'make sense of the world'? What was the message he was trying to convey?

Experiment:

Make your own décollage.  Experiment with different binding mediums  - clear acrylic paint or simply transparent glue, for example.  Try different techniques for ripping back the layers.  Try different combinations of subject matter - magazine, newspapers, books, posters, photographs etc.
